Best Winter Dice: Everwinter Sharpedge Dice Set
Depending on where you live (and when you are reading this...) the snow might be here in just a few weeks. But whether you are in the middle of playing through Rime of the Frostmaiden or heading into a snowing region in your homebrew campaign, our Everwinter Sharpedge dice are a perfect fit for any cold weather, winter adventure!
What Makes Winter... Winter?
Let's start with talking about winter... it only happens because the earth is tilted at about 23.5 degrees. When the axis is tilted AWAY from the sun, that hemisphere not only is sliiiightly father away from the sun, but also gets shorter days and less direct sunlight. This results in the archetypal winter days: snow, cold, and short.
Each ecosystem is different, but in general the flora and fauna everywhere respond in similar ways to these changes. Plants go dormant to conserve energy until spring, or shed their leaves to help them survive the colder temperatures (except for evergreen, duh). Insects die off while animals hibernate or migrate.
For most regions throughout human history, winter is the one season where farmers are unable to till the earth, and so shut themselves indoors doing maintenance tasks. That combined with barren trees, quiet snow, and lack of animal activity give winter several layers of symbolic meaning:
1. Death and Transitions: During winter the land seems dead, but really it is only dormant, resting, recovering, and rejuvenating as it waits to come back again in the spring. It is a necessary phase in the cycle of life, even if it feels barren and painful to us as we live through it. Many a soul has gone through a similar experience of "death," whether it be losing something important externally or maturing internally, to "rise again" into something beautiful later on.
2. Isolation and Community: In the past, it was summer that was dominated by festivals, harvests, and feasts... social gatherings galore. But winter isolates people from one another, all cooped up inside in an attempt to stay warm. As a result, winter carries two connotations. On the one hand, people can feel cut off and experience dreadful loneliness as snow and ice creates a new barrier between them and the community. On the other hand, the numerous winter holidays have themes of joy and hope, and provide reasons for loving people to gather around a hearth and be warm with one another in the midst of the winter cold.
3. Reflection or Renewal: Winter weather prevents a lot of activity, and before a Netflix binge was an option, a lot of people had more time on their hands to meditate and process their existence. Whether staring into a flickering fire or gazing up at the starry night sky, people were alone with their thoughts as they existed in a world devoid of distractions. The season provided an opportunity for reflection; to understand oneself and realign their values and place in the world.
4. Resilience and Endurance: Going to school, taking out the trash, picking up dog poop... it doesn't matter what you are doing outside, winter makes everything harder (including the poop). Living in the season requires one to persevere over the tough conditions, and those that thrive have an aura of courage, strength, and willingness to endure the unpleasant and painful.
Introducing the Everwinter Dice Set from Awesome Dice
The Everwinter dice set is a resin 7-dice, standard polyhedral set designed for table top role-playing games. These sharp edge resin dice evoke a land twinkling with lanterns as snow blankets evergreen fir trees:
- Strong Resin Swirl: The base is a swirl of white and black, mimicking the two distinctive elements of winter: a white snow swirling in a breeze, and the long, dark nights.
- Green Leaf Insert: This specific listing has no holographic foil inclusions... but it DOES have white glitter and imitation pine trees! The glitter reminds us that stars seem to shine brighter in a winter sky, while the green is of snow laden trees glittering in the sunlight!
- Bronze Script: The bronze script not only stands out, leaving no ambiguity with every roll, but also evokes a roaring fire or lanterns lighting the way for a sled.
I was inspired by "Age of Winter" in The Chronicles of Narnia, the 100-year-long winter imposed by the White Witch, Jadis, over the land before the arrival of the Pevensie children. The bronze light and snow-dusted greenery just screams the iconic "lamppost in the middle of a winter forest" in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
They are a simply fabulous set of specialty dice to add to your collection, more rare and wonderful than Turkish Delight!
Perfect Player Characters to Pair with a Set of Winter Dice
Goliath Barbarian, Path of the Storm Herald: Living in the snowy mountain peaks and in the desolate wilderness, any Goliath is familiar with the harsh sting of winter. Their size, strength, and culture pair naturally with the feral barbarian class, and when you choose the Storm Herald path, you can use their rage to harness the power of an arcane blizzard!
Eladrin Ranger, Horizon Walker: Horizon Walkers are protectors of planar boundaries, and the more "winter wonderland" a glade becomes, the more likely a portal to the Feywild is to appear. An Eladrin ranger, shifted to a winter seasonal form, would not only emotionally embody the climate, but make sure none wander through to their doom.
Tiefling (Levistus) Druid, Circle of the Land (Arctic): These tieflings gain their infernal heritage from Levistus, the archdevil trapped in an icy prison of Stygia in the Nine Hells. They get resistance to cold damage and access to cold-related spells like Armor of Agathys. Tieflings are also naturally shunned by society, making them a logical pairing for an arctic druid casting elemental spells like Sleet Storm, Ice Storm, and Cone of Cold.
White Dragonborn Fighter, Rune Knight: White dragons like snow. Frost giants like snow. And even though they are mortal enemies, what if a white dragonborn hates his draconic ancestry, and so drew strength instead from the power of giant runes? Don't know about you, but that sounds kinda badass to me!
If none of those characters resonate with you, these dice might still be a great fit if you're playing through Rime of the Frostmaiden. This 5e module is set in the frozen tundra of Icewind Dale, which remains trapped in endless, frosty night due to the winter curse of Auril, the goddess of winter. If you are constantly rolling skill checks in frigid blizzards and saving throws against monsters lurking under the ice, then no matter what character you create, these dice will pair great!
